A mariner was rescued by the Coast Guard on Tuesday morning when his vessel started taking on water in the Gastineau Channel.

The survivor was safely evacuated at 6:33 a.m. by a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station Juneau. He was transported in stable condition to Harris Harbor.

The Coast Guard Sector Southeast Alaska command center received a distress call via channel 16 at 6:08 a.m. indicating that the 40-foot commercial fishing vessel Marco was taking on water with one person aboard.

Upon arrival at the scene, the boat crew found the distressed vessel aground approximately 30 yards from the shore.

Lt. Trevor Lyman, Coast Guard Sector Southeast command duty officer, commended the man's quick call, which played a crucial role in the success of the operation. He mentioned that coordination and support from watchstanders ensured a safe outcome for the mariner in need.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and Coast Guard marine environmental responders are keeping an eye out for any potential environmental concerns.

The vessel's owner is making arrangements for commercial salvage, and the incident is currently under investigation.
