After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 48th annual Maine Fishermen’s Forum (MFF) opens its door to exhibitors, fishermen, and their families once again. As someone that comes from a fishing family in Maine, I have had the pleasure of attending this tradeshow since I was a kid. From a young age, I was able to gain the perspective of many fisheries from my dad, who has always navigated multiple industries, which currently include lobster and scallops. He spends his time off from the water sitting on the board of directors for the Maine Lobstermen’s Association and for the MFF.
Over the years, I have watched the MFF incorporate more and more seminars regarding sustainable practices within our Maine fisheries. These include chats about ocean cleanup efforts, involving the next generation in fishing, to showing how aquaculture can coincide with the fishing industries. For 48 years, the MFF has created a comfortable and collaborative environment for scientists, fishermen, farmers, and legislators.
No matter the circumstances of this year’s catch or harvest, the community that participates in the MFF continues to make the legendary seafood reception and college scholarships possible. Since I was a kid, fishers, and aquaculturist have taken it upon themselves to donate generous amounts of seafood for the chefs of the MFF to create amazing dishes for attendees. The generosity continues with cash donations and a silent and live auction that supports the scholarship funds for children fishing families that are in higher education programs. These donations come directly from the hardworking fishermen and women that keep New England fishing industries afloat.
With many things on the horizon for New England’s coastal communities, the MFF is a great resource for those involved in the marine industries to get informed about new regulations, network with those involved in all different sectors, and eat amazing sustainable seafood!
