A 4- to 5-foot fish breached in front of us as we slowly plied the James River in Richmond.

This “living fossil” sunk back down after clearing the water and was the second sighting of a one-and-a-half hour boat tour from Rockett’s Landing.

Mike Lyden, assistant director of operations for the James River Association, treated about 25 passengers to an informational ride Sept. 16 as part of the JRA’s public education offerings.
